Project FleX-RAY enters the world of iWORiD

June 12, 2023

We are pleased to announce that our abstract on “Flexible X-Ray Imaging Detectors Using Scintillating Fibers” has been accepted by the International Workshop on Radiation ImagineDetectors (iWORiD) 2023. So, between 25-29 June, our Horizon 2020 FleX-RAY research project will join the scientific community in Oslo, where the annual event will occur.

The paper has been co-authored by Scott Wilbur and Christos Anastopoulos (University of Sheffield), Martin Angelmahr (Fraunhofer HHI), Giorgos Asfis (TWI Hellas), Brindus Comanescu (Optoelectronica 2001), Jannis Koch (Fraunhofer HHI), Magnus Lindblom (Research Institute ofSweden), Kristin Lohwasser (University of Sheffield), Helen Maguire (University of Sheffield), Nikolaos Marinos (TWI Hellas), Nikos Panagopoulos (TWI Hellas), Walter Margulis (Research Institute of Sweden) and Kamal Saoucha (University of Sheffield).

The accepted abstract focuses on the project’s flexible electronic X-ray detector, which is suitable for a variety of applications in the industrial and medical fields. FleX-RAY employs a sheet of flexible scintillating fibres to detect X-rays and guide the scintillation light to arrays of silicon photomultipliers. The detector also self-reports its curved shape using optical waveguides with Bragg gratings on a flexible glass substrate, which act as strain sensors.

In the specific contribution to iWORiD, our consortium aims to showcase the current FleX-RAY advancements in scintillating fibres, self-shape-reporting sensors, and image reconstruction algorithms. Last but not least, simulations of the expected detector performance and results of the initial tests on the FleX-RAY prototype will also be presented.
